My unibody MacBook does not recognize my Sony DCR-HC30 camcorder?
My first generation Aluminum Unibody MacBook (the one without the memory card reader) does not recognize my Sony DCR-HC30 camcorder. I already have a FireWire 400 to USB adapter. Do I need a special driver?, because I cannot find nothing on Sony’s website. Please help! I have some video I want to edit in iMovie 09.
But firewire to USB adapters do not work, so at this point, everything is behaving properly.
If your MacBook was made before October 2008, it has a firewire 400 port (6-pin). If your MacBook was made after June 2009, it has a firewire 800 port (9-pin). If your MacBook was made between October 2008 and June 2009, there is no firewire port and there is no way to add one – and since firewire to USB adapters do not work you have two options:
1) Use an older Mac with a firewire port and an external drive. Save the video project files to he external drive. Dismount the drive, power down the drive, connect it to the MacBook, power it up and edit.
2) Replace your firewire-less MacBook with a Mac that has a firewire port.
The MacBooks made between October 2008 and June 2009 and MacBook Airs are the ONLY Macs made in the last 10+ years without a firewire port.
You won’t find anything on Sony’s site. You do not need a special driver. USB is USB and firewire is firewire (or DV or i.LINK or IEEE1394). They use different protocols and are not interchangeable.
